
DeWitt first appeared on stage at the age of 13. At the age of 13, Dewitt began appearing on the stage. She graduated with an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. In the following year, as she was performing in summer show when she met with the director, she convinced her to attend UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt declared that she never encountered Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. Dewitt's portrayal of Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run is her most well-known. She was chosen to play the show's pilot and was eventually offered the role. Janet was also a part of an episode of The Ropers in 1979. DeWitt began her acting career in an episode of 1984 on Three's Company. She made her return to the stage in June 1991 when she played a part on a Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. The actress later appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured a character that was modeled after her voiced by another actress in 1997. She appeared in an episode Cybill and made a brief appearance on Living Single's last episode. Her work in the 2000s include TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
